Sound familiar?

We hear this all the time. So we bought 9 popular scratch removers and tested them for four weeks on 6 real cars: black, white, silver, red and blue, from a work truck to a family SUV. We used them on key scratches, cart dings, bush scratches, swirl marks and paint rubbed off from other cars.

Why most scratch removers let you down

Most scratches only go into the clear coat. That is the thin, clear top layer that protects your paint. The scratch looks white because its sharp edges catch the light. To make it vanish, you have to smooth those edges and fill the groove so light passes straight through again.

Most products only do half the job. Some are too weak and just hide the scratch until the next car wash. Others are so rough that they rub a dull, cloudy patch around the scratch. And paint pens only cover it with new paint, which you can see up close.

Problems we saw again and again
A good scratch remover should:

How we ranked them

Every product got the same scratches on the same cars. Then we scored each one out of 10 in five areas:

  1. Scratch removal: how much of the scratch was gone?
  2. Finish & shine: did the spot look glossy, or cloudy?
  3. Easy to use: could someone doing it for the first time get a good result?
  4. Safe on paint: any dull spots, swirls or damage?
  5. Value & guarantee: price per fix, and what happens if it doesn't work.

Only five products scored high enough to make our list. Here they are.

Real cars

I tested 9 scratch removers. Here's why Scratchless won.

I have fixed paint for a living for 18 years, so I went in doubtful. Most "miracle" scratch products I have tried do nothing, or they leave a cloudy smear that looks worse than the scratch. Scratchless was different from the first try.

Real scratches on real cars, before and after a couple of minutes of rubbing with Scratchless.

Test 1: a key scratch on a black door

Black paint shows everything, so I started there. I put a drop the size of a pea on the foam pad and rubbed back and forth over a long key scratch for about two minutes. The white line faded as I rubbed, like an eraser on a pencil mark. After a wipe with a clean cloth, I had to tilt my head to find where it had been.

Test 2: shopping cart scuffs and paint transfer

Next, a family SUV with scuffs on both rear doors, plus a strip of red paint from somebody's bumper. The paint transfer came off in under a minute. The scuffs took two rounds. The rubber cart marks were gone after one.

Halfway through a bumper scuff. The left side is done; the right side still has the mark.

Test 3: old swirl marks

Last, a silver car with years of car wash swirls on the hood. Scratchless will not turn a 10 year old hood into a showroom hood in one go, but the swirls were much harder to see and the paint had a deep, wet shine where I had worked.

The results
  1. Fastest results: most scratches faded in 1 to 2 minutes. Nothing else was close.
  2. Clean finish: no cloudy patch, no streaks, no dull spot.
  3. Works on every color: black, white, silver, red and blue all came out the same.
  4. Easy: no drill, no paint codes, no second polish. Rub, wipe, done.
Before and after: scratch on a black car
Before and after: scuff on a silver bumper
Before and after: scratches by a door handle

Two minutes in your driveway. No body shop, no $300 bill.

"Most products either do nothing or rub a dull patch around the scratch. Scratchless smooths the edges of the scratch and fills it in one step, and it leaves a clean shine. That is the combination I look for."— Mike Delgado, car detailer

What it can and can't fix

Here is a simple test. Run your fingernail across the scratch.

Your nail glides over it, or barely catchesIt's in the clear coat. Scratchless should make it disappear. This is most everyday scratches.
Paint from another car, cart marks, swirlsThese came off easily in our test, usually in one round.
Your nail gets stuck deep in it, or you see bare metalIt's through the paint. Scratchless will make it look much better, but no polish can fill it like new paint. Use a touch-up pen for these.

Don't use it on glass, plastic trim, matte paint or car wraps. Work in the shade on a cool car.

"I tried one of those sparkle cloths first. It did nothing on my scratch. This stuff took it out in two minutes. Wish I had found it first."

"My truck lives on job sites. Branches had scratched both sides of the bed. One tube did the whole driver's side and it looks like it came off the lot."

"Between the shopping carts and my kids' bikes, my SUV doors were full of scuffs. They came off in about two minutes each. I keep a tube in the trunk now."

The bottom line: which scratch remover should you buy?

For the scratches most of us get (keys, carts, branches, other people's car doors), Sinuvo Scratchless is the one we would buy. It was the fastest, the easiest and left the best finish in our test.

A nano cloth is handy for tiny marks in the glove box. Rubbing compound works if you know what you are doing. A touch up pen is the right tool only for chips down to bare metal, and a drill kit is for detailers doing a whole car.

Frequently asked questions

Do car scratch removers really work?

The good ones do, on scratches in the clear coat, which is most everyday scratches. In our test, Scratchless made those disappear. No polish can fully fix a scratch that goes down to bare metal; that needs paint.

Will it work on my car's color?

Yes. Scratchless has no color in it. It works on the clear top layer, which is the same on every car, so it works on black, white, silver, red, blue and metallic paint.

How long does it take?

Most scratches took 1 to 2 minutes of rubbing. Deeper ones took two or three rounds.

Can it damage my paint?

Not when used as directed. Wash and dry the spot first, work in the shade, and try it on a small hidden spot if you are unsure. Don't use it on glass, plastic trim, matte paint or wraps.

Is it sold on Amazon?

No. Scratchless is only sold on its official website. Copies sold elsewhere are not the same product and are not covered by the 60-day guarantee.

What if it doesn't work for me?

You have 60 days to try it. If you are not happy, contact the seller for a full refund.
